Fate

How close she had come to missing this astonishing phenomenon.

How foolish she had been for assuming it would never happen.

And how fortunate she was that fate allowed her a second chance.

All that she had seen these past few hours assured her that this was real. Martok’s suspicions, questions, and actions were as they should be. Old council members were as she remembered them from before Qob’s journey, with appropriate seasoning for the twenty-four…eight years passed.

Martok’s orders were just. The Qob was a wreck of long years of makeshift repairs. Her crew was a stew of elements never intended to be blended. The situation required long contemplation and deliberation, and Martok was allowing just that.

Soon they would all be reunited with long lost family. Celebrations would resound throughout the Homeworld and beyond. Songs would be sung and Honor celebrated.

Yet she nearly lost all of this in an impetuous gamble of life that it would never happen.

Bch strode silently though the corridors of the Qob after she and Kwalus announced the Council’s decisions to the crew. She paused at the door to her quarters before entering. Inside were her sons.

If she had not gambled, they would not be. The last sixteen years… would not be. Sixteen years. Sixteen years of learning and sharing the complexity that was Messner. Fourteen and thirteen years of sharing that with two new souls… Two beautiful young men who would not exist had she not succumbed to frustration.

Bch smiled. Today she would share that which she loved most with the world. How proud her family would be! And how fortunate her sons would be to continue their lives surrounded by people who loved them in a rich and honorable culture.

How fortunate, indeed.

She entered her keycode to their quarters and ducked as a hunting club whizzed past her head.
